Can a Dog Save 'Superman'?

This morning, Warner Bros. released the first trailer for James Gunn’s upcoming film, Superman. Here it is in case you haven’t seen it.

This is a start-from-scratch Superman where you won’t need to have seen any of the previous on-screen iterations of the character. On the one hand, you can feel Gunn and WB working to wipe the slate clean from Zack Snyder’s darker take on the character. Just look at the first teaser poster for Man of Steel versus the one for Superman:

Opening with Superman’s dog, Krypto, helping his good buddy, is a nice way to kick off the trailer as is the use of John Williams’ iconic theme. But I do worry about the overarching tone and content here.
